Maintenance of Railway Lines

The Railway Line Maintenance Service consists of five working units with the following areas of responsibility. It also carries out a range of activities to ensure the safe and functional maintenance of the railway network.

Operating units

The Railway Track Maintenance Service is organised into five operating units, with the following areas of activity:

  1. MLH unit – Leposaviq

    • km 164+400 – 213+800 Rudnicë – Mitrovicë

  2. MLH unit – Fushë Kosovë

    • km 213+800 – 280+000 Mitrovicë – Ferizaj
    • km 84+400 – 129+598 Merdar – F. Kosovë
    • km 0+000 – 12+870 Miradi – Badovc

  3. MLH unit – Kaçanik

    • km 280+000 – 313+510 Ferizaj – Hani i Elezit

  4. MLH unit – Drenas

    • km 0+679 – 31+800 Fushë Kosovë – Baincë
    • km 0+000 – 15+020 Bardh – Magure

  5. MLH unit – Klinë

    • km 31+800 – 81+900 Baincë – Pejë
    • km 0+362 – 58+831 Klinë – Prizren

Information on Railway Line Maintenance

The general condition of the operational railway lines, namely those on which railway traffic is carried out, is in good technical condition.
The Railway Line Maintenance Service carries out the maintenance of all railway switches, including visual inspections of the switches three times a month and technical inspections once a month. It also performs regular maintenance and prepares the switches for the winter season.

Inspection and control

  • Visual inspection from the locomotive, checking the condition of the track.
  • Visual inspection of switches three times a month and a technical inspection once a month.
  • Unit heads – inspection of the lines on foot.
  • Monitoring of the Klinë – Prizren track.
  • Track monitoring during periods of high temperatures.

Track maintenance

  • Replacement of worn sleepers on the track, bridges and switches.
  • Replacement of rails on the track.
  • Loading of rails and sleepers.
  • Lifting and levelling along switches and track.
  • Treatment and lubrication of bolts on switches and in tunnels.
  • Adjustment of check rails on switches and track, usually before and after bridges.

Seasonal work

  • Preparation of switches for the winter season.
  • During the winter season, clearing snow from switches.
  • Removal of ice from tunnels and crossings.
  • During the winter season, the central heating service is supported with labour.

Cleaning and infrastructure

  • Clearing the profile on railway lines.
  • Unloading ballast from wagons onto the track.
  • Cleaning and adjustment of legal level-crossing structures.
  • Removal of illegal crossings.
  • Visual inspection of the substructure, bridges, tunnels and drainage channels.
  • Cleaning of drainage channels and embankments.

Organisation and support

  • Physical security at the Directorate, Electro and Terminal buildings.
  • Under agreements, industrial tracks and tracks for Trainkos JSC are also maintained.
  • Preparation of technical specifications for procurement.
  • Supervision and management of projects.
  • Other work is carried out as needed.
